Burst Pipe Emergency
A burst pipe can cause serious damage to the structure of your home and the electrical wiring. For these reasons a burst pipe is classed as a water emergency. Below are some steps you can follow to help reduce the negative effects.burst pipe damage.
- First, turn off the water supply. You should find a stop tap under you kitchen sink or near to where the water pipes enter your home. Then turn on all your cold taps in order to drain the remaining water from the system. If you see bulging ceilings, be careful as the room may not be safe to enter. Making a small hole in the ceiling to drain the bulge may help to prevent further damage. Use a bucket to catch the falling water.
- Second, turn off any water heating systems, such as central heating, immersion heaters etc. Then turn on the hot taps to drain the systems.
- Third, turn off the electrics. If water is near any electrical appliance don’t touch it.
- Finally, call a professional to repair the damage.
Frozen Pipe Emergency
Another water emergency is when thawed water escapes from a break in a pipe which was caused due to it being frozen. Should you be faced with a frozen pipe, the following advice may be of some help.
- First, turn off the water supply. There should be a stop tap under your sink or where the pipes enter the building. Also turn off the water supply to any tanks you may have in the loft.
- Second, if there is anything of value around the frozen pipe then these need to be moved or protected.
- Third, thaw out the frozen pipe. This can be done by firstly opening the nearest tap, then using a hot water bottle or hairdryer apply the heat from the tap towards the tank. Do use a blow torch or heat gun.frozen pipes.
Of course it is always better to prevent pipes from freezing in the first place. The following winter care tips should help. Insulate all your pipes, insulate your loft and the side of your water tanks.
On cold days opening a loft hatch will help to get some heat from the home into the loft. If you are not in for a while, then ask a friend to keep an eye out for frozen pipes.
Any leaking taps need to be fixed as they may freeze and block the pipe. Also always keep your heating on low rather than off during the winter months while you are not at home. Ideally, check to see if your boiler has a frost protection thermostat.
